The Mediterranean climate, the plethora of gorgeous landscapes, from mountain regions to the coastal area with its lovely beaches, make Croatia a popular holiday area. Whether Dalmatia, Istria or the Kvarner Gulf - every holiday area has its own charm. The country offers a rich culture, historical places and vibrant life, as well as a peaceful stay in tune with nature and historical traditions. A large selection of sports and leisure activities, including water sports activities, charming areas for long hikes and cycling tours round off the selection.
Dalmatia: Most cities in Croatia's long, southeastern region are located on the sea, whereas the hinterland is sparsely populated. Idyllic coastal regions with a large number of islands and great, pine-lined beaches with crystal clear water characterise Dalmatia. Among the cities worth a visit are Dubrovnik and the metropolis Split, the second largest city in Croatia with 220,000 residents.
Istria: Istria is the largest peninsula on the northern Adriatic and nearly entirely surrounded by water. This very popular holiday destination is situated, therefore, on the sea and offers holidaymakers a large selection of sports and leisure activities, making for a multi-faceted stay. Famous beach resorts are Poreč, Rovinj and Medulin. Pula, the region's largest city with 82,000 residents, offers a diverse impression of local culture and Istrian life.
Kvarner Gulf: The Kvarner Gulf or Kvarner Region lies east of Istria and is distinguished by sophisticated beach resorts, inviting beaches and secluded bays. Popular destinations are the pearls of Kvarner, the town Opatija with lovely Gründerzeit villas and blooming gardens, as well as the vibrant metropolis Rijeka with 140,000 residents. The gulf is also full of islands, including Cres and Krk, the largest islands in the Adriatic.
